Sandy Skoglund | Personal

I’m so lucky to be going to school and learning from amazing artists.  I’m in a lecture class where artists that use different mediums, have different styles and different inspirations, come and talk to us about their work.

Last week we heard from a guy that I SWEAR was high every time he painted.  Yeah.  But tonight, we are going to hear from a photographer/mix media artist, Sandy Skouglund.  She creates surrealist images by building crazy detailed scenes including humans, furniture, animals, and other objects.  Then she photographs her scenes.  She uses lots of bold colors that make if very dream like.

Anyways, go google her name, check out her work and I’ll let you know how the lecture went.

Personal Work | Honolulu, Hawaii + GIVEAWAY!

In November I was able to go back to Hawaii for an extended weekend to go to my friends wedding.  On Sunday I walked around my mom’s neighbor hood and took some photos of whatever I saw.  I used two types of film 1. Ektar which gives beautiful, bright colors. and 2. E100vs and I cross processed it.  This film produces crazy colors, especially when over exposed and cross processed.  This was a little experiment, I guess you can say.  I love how they turned out and want to share with you in…

Film and Digital

As you’ve noticed I’ve been shooting film lately.   I’m still not even close to being confident when I shoot with film.  I don’t have a light meter, which is a must to know if you’re exposing properly, so I’ve been trying to memorize my exposures as much as possible.  But you need to start somewhere so during my sessions I would whip out my film camera and take a couple of frames with it and then switch back to my digital.  Below are a couple of poses I took with both my digital and film cameras.  See if you can tell which is which?  One is not better than the other.  It all depends on preference.  For me, film is my personal preference.  There’s a creaminess and softness to it that I love.  Also look at the highlights, especially in photos 3 and 4.  In #3 they’re totally blown out where you can’t see where the train car ends and the sky starts and #4 you can totally see the blue sky AND the subjects are better lit.  Beautiful!  Again it’s all preference.  The color is usually spot on where with digital I have to almost always tweak it and even after that sometimes I think things should be warmer, or colder.  And for someone who hates post processing film is the way to go.  Just send it to the lab and it comes back looking amazing.  Much better than spending hours behind a computer.  I really hope to get better at shooting film and start incorporating it more in my sessions.  If anybody wants to take a leap with me had have an entire session shot on film please don’t hesitate to ask when booking!

Texas

This was a little gift for my clients after using it as a prop for their engagement session.

I wanted to give a shout out to two wonderful photographers in the Lone Star State, Spanki Mills and Angela Richardson.  I LOVE these girls and if you’re in the area and need an amazing photographer, you know who to call.

Our good friends, the Barnums, will be moving to Texas later this year and we’ll miss them a lot but as photography goes, their in good hands.  We’ll miss you guys TONS!!

Update: My cousin, Stacie, is there fighting a fire right now!  Come home safe Stacie!

Airplanes and Blazers

So of course the first photos I have ready to blog about WPPI had nothing to do with WPPI.  When we were in Vegas Anna and I, two old married women with children, decided to kick off the flats and put on some heels for the night.  The event was called Airplanes and Blazers, a vintage Vegas meets rack pack party.  We decided to go all out!  If there was an award for the best dressed, Anna would’ve won HANDS DOWN!

Sharkpig

The best part of the night was meeting these two CUTE girls.  Check out their cute sites and amazing talent!

Lori Hensley and Anna Hedges

More of WPPI to come.  Still SO many more people to give shout outs too!
